It is inevitable that Master David and his slave will be together in public. It is important that the slavery is kept alive at all times. Slavery is not something that is merely done behind closed doors. However, it is also something that should not be forced onto the general public, and as such public behaviour is subtle and unobtrusive. The at-ease Mode is the mode of behaviour that is used when Master David and his slave are in public together. Behaviours here are used mainly in public and are not to be abused. slave will remain respectful to Master David, while using subtle means to display submission to him. Example: casting eyes down or serving him food and drinks, or sitting at His feet if appropriate. slave is not allowed to wander off from its Master unless it asks first for permission and is given permission. The permission is given for a particular purpose only. § In public, slave will assume the at-ease mode of behaviour, unless instructed otherwise. § When away from home, slave will be disciplined for any inappropriate behaviour once back in slave mode at Master David’s home. § slave's behaviour must always engender respect for its slavery, and of course, for Master David. No activity is to ever intentionally nor carelessly endanger that objective. § slave may freely engage in conversations in public appropriately and responsibly. § slave responds to Master David's presence in public the same as in private with some modifications to prevent inviting public criticism. § In the general public, slave normally should present standing, to enter or leave Master David's presence or consciousness, where possible. § slave should adopt a standing, discrete present position whenever possible and particularly when slave seeks permission to do something. It may only be appropriate to say, “I’m just off for a piss” rather than a more formal slave request for permission. It is understood that slave will address its requests, questions and comments in these freer situations according to the types of people present and the nature of the gathering. § In a restaurant, a slave stands in a modified present, until Master David tells slave, or points to the seat, to indicate that it should sit. slave would discretely say "Yes Master" (if possible) and take its seat. § In a public or work situation around people who are not aware of the lifestyle, or where it would clearly be inappropriate, slave should do its best to avoid "I", "me", and "my". A slave never uses language which would invite criticism, cause disrespect for slaves, or endanger the effectiveness of the slave's work or profession. § In a public situation, slave is permitted to use a toilet without having to lift the seat (for hygienic reasons), and may stand at a urinal (again for hygienic reasons), though permission to use the toilet needs to be sought beforehand. § slave may be required to undergo discrete public humiliation exercises and Master David, if this is done, expects the same degree of obedience in this situation as he does at home. § slave should walk to the left and about one step behind Master David, with its hands behind its back whenever possible. § Even when walking, as always, slave only speaks after it has requested "Master?" (when appropriate and out of ear-shot of members of the public) unless responding to its Master's questions. § When it is not possible to refer to Master David as Master or Sir, slave needs to replace those words with ‘David’, as appropriate, and depending on the situation.
